It was in 2008 when I discovered the world of holistic health... stop me if you've heard this story but I actually bless the day my back started hurting due to work because it's the day I met my chiropractor. No it's not a love affair perse... its a holistic love affair with wellness that began. It was painful, it was nerve crazy, it cracked, yep my chiropractor adjusted me to fix brachial plexus pain and cervical subluxation. In other words I had been carrying my heavy laptop bag for so long my neck and shoulder were swerving to the right cramping my nerves... OUCH! What would've hurt more is if I had continued that crazy route without receiving any treatment. Look I have nothing against Western medicine, it has its place, but there's no way anything but surgery and pain killers would've fixed it if it hadn't been for my chiro.
So there you have it... he fixed me alright!
He fixed my shoulder so well that I had to ask 10 million questions on how he did and how I can do the same thing at home. Yep I'm a DIY type girl but I knew I'd have to get some degree or schooling to truly become understand it. And thanks to his patience I learned a heck of lot about my own body and he even inspired me to pursue a career in it. Turns out massage and coaching were my cup of tea and I went in head first, never looking back.
What I learned in these last 7 years since then astounded me!
I've taken steps to add more holistic medicines, practices and practitioners into my realm of healing because I knew in my bones (no pun intended) that the chiro was on to something and so I experimented. Here's how it turned out:
Experiment #1- 3 day cleanse
I had done several 1 day cleanses but this past year I took the plunge and did a 3 day and WOW what an amazing experience. I learned:
1- My body can get used to living off juices and not crave food as much. No kidding!
2- My body had become allergic to foods over the years and it came to light as I reintroduced cheese products, certain vegetables, and certain spices. I immediately noticed a reaction as soon as that day because my body had become so clean that anything that it didn't agree with it rejected and turned into a pimple, stomach ache or other equally unpleasant reaction. Try it... carefully of course!

Experiment #2 - Exercise combos
I'd been an athlete as a kid but had fallen off the wagon now and again since then. Finally I decided to do something more interesting and add a trampoline with a fun addition to my workouts. I learned:
1- Combinations with music, youtube audios ROCK! It keeps me listening and enjoying the experience so much more. So with whatever workout you do make sure you combine it with something or someone you love to make the experiences 2 or 3x more fun!
2- It improved my blood pressure, lymphatic and circulatory system, and my legs and abs have never looked so GOOD! Take that Tina Turner!

Experiment #3: Natural pain release
Yes there's nothing wrong with the occasional ibuprofen or NSAID, but there's nothing like natural pain release to make a more permanent change. I started practicing what I call "Somatic Healing with Intentional Focus Technique" (SHIFT)... it's basics involve focusing on the area of pain, and holding the intention to release it which is most often emotional or experiential. I would literally feel my body release that point via emotions or energy moving through and away from that point making it feel way better! I learned:
1- I tried this with a consistent pain I'd been having on my right lower back and it may be slightly achy at worst these days. Next step, practicing it a few times in the same location to remove it completely.
2- It helped me realize that often chronic pain is emotional or becomes so because of the difficult to resist mental focus on it. Humans are notorious for focusing on the neg but the good news is we can change that!
Experiment #4: Natural emotional release
Again there's nothing wrong with seeing a therapist or coach for that matter ;-) But what if you can learn how to release some of the emotional blocks yourself and be in a happier state more consistently? (thanks Abraham Hicks) I was watching an interview on Oprah with Pema Chodron and she talked aboutcompassionate abiding which in essence is the emotional reframed approach of SHIFT. It involves feeling the emotional pain and then locating where it's connected to your body. Then letting the emotions move through you without resisting it. I learned:
1 - It works just as well as SHIFT does because the intention is the same - release - whether emotional or physical at first.
2 - The feeling of the release leaves such a peace and happiness that it makes you wonder why we ever live with pain for very long at all!
These 4 experiments of changing or incorporating some daily habits and being consistent at it has been soooo seeded in my being that NOW my first question when working through any physical/emotional need is how can I handle this holistically.
